Most rape cases in Kedah involve students
ALOR STAR: Statistics on rape cases in Kedah shows a disturbing trend with 226 of the 309 cases reported involving students, mostly those from rural areas.
Kedah police chief Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said that of the 226 cases, 187 involved 12-16 year-olds while the other 39 cases involved 17-18 year-olds.
"Rape cases that involve students comprise about 74 percent of the total rape cases reported in Kedah last year," he told reporters at the monthly gathering of the Kedah police contingent on Monday.
Students involved in rape usually had social problems that needed to be addressed from the legal aspect and supported by education and the family institution, he said.
Syed Ismail also said records showed that only four rapes cases that involved 18 year-olds were nonconsensual.
"Rape usually occurred after the girls had willingly followed their boy friends," he added. - Bernama
