Three points may be the target against West Ham tonight - but the Reds will regain top spot in the Premier League simply by avoiding defeat to the Hammers. Here's the big match preview.
Liverpool play host to West Ham United with the Reds looking to bounce back from the frustrating draw with Fulham. Victory for the Reds will ensure that they march three points clear at the summit of the Premier League and maintain their unbeaten home record. Rafael Benitez's side have not lost in the league at Anfield since last December and Liverpool enjoy a fine home record against the Hammers. The London club haven't recorded a victory at Anfield for 35 matches. Furthermore, the Reds have only lost five of the last 41 league meetings between the two teams. West Ham did claim a victory over the Reds at Upton Park last season, courtesy of a stoppage-time penalty from Mark Noble, but Liverpool ran out comfortable 4-0 winners in the return fixture at Anfield, with Fernando Torres helping himself to a hati-trick. Overall, Liverpool have won 53 of the league meetings between the teams compared to West Ham's 21 triumphs. There have been 28 draws. The two sides unforgettably met in the nothing Cup Final of 2006 at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. Steven Gerrard was the hero as he twice brought Liverpool level in a pulsating 3-3 draw, including a dramatic 30-yard strike as the game entered injury-time, before the Reds claimed a penalty shoot-out victory over their opponents. Liverpool's biggest home win against West Ham came in April 1984. Ian Rush and Graeme Souness both helped themselves to a brace of goals with Kenny Dalglish and Ronnie Whelan also adding to the 6-0 scoreline. Former Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy is the Hammer's current number ten. The boss: Gianfranco Zola was appointed as the Irons boss in September, signing a three-year contract at Upton Park and becoming the first foreign coach to manage at Upton Park in the process. His first game in charge saw West Ham dispatch Newcastle 3-1 in London but the likeable Italian has saw the form of his new club fluctuate since his arrival. A run of seven Premier League games with a win was halted with an away victory over Sunderland last weekend. Zola's only previous management experience came as an assistant to Pierluigi Casiraghi in the Italian under-21 set-up. The 41-year-old is arguably better known for his successful playing career. His first break came as the legendary Diego Maradona's understudy at Napoli, having previously spent time Nuorese and Torres. "I learnt everything from Diego," Zola said of his time with Maradona. "I used to spy on him every time he trained and learned how to curl a free-kick just like him. "After one year I had completely changed. I saw him do things in training and in matches I had never even dreamed possible. He was simply the best I've ever seen." Zola won the Scudetto during his first season in the Italian top-flight but was sold to Parma in 1993 for 'financial reasons'. By now a regular for Italy, Zola continued to flourish at his new club, winning the UEFA Cup in 1995. In November 1996, Zola joined Chelsea and made an instance impact, winning the nothing Cup and being named the Football Writer's Association Player of the Year. Zola went on to make over 200 appearances at Stamford Bridge and wasvoted 'Chelsea's best ever player' by the fans. He was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to football. The dangerman: Craig Bellamy left Anfield to move to Upton Park in the summer of 2007. However, injuries have disrupted the Welshman's time at the Hammers but the Reds will be well aware of the threat posed by the 29-year-old. Bellamy is the current captain of Wales and has won 54 caps and scored 16 goals for his country. West Ham United factfile: West Ham are nicknamed 'The Hammers' because of the club's origins as Thames Ironworks company football team, although their fans often refer to them as 'The Irons'. They were formed in 1895 as Thames Ironworks. They play at the Boleyn Ground (more commonly known as Upton Park) which has a capacity of 35,647. The Hammers do not play with a sponsor on their shirts after former sponsor, XL, went into administration in September. West Have have won the nothing Cup on three occasions, most recently in 1980. They also lifted the UEFA Cup in 1965, beating 1860 Munich 2-0 at Wembley. The Hammers have retired the number six jersey in tribute to England World Cup winner Bobby Moore. West Ham were the last visiting team to win at Arsenal's old Highbury stadium and the first to triumph at the Gunners' Emirates home. They have only had 12 managers in the history of the club, fewer than any other English club. The Hammers broke their transfer record in July 2007 when they signed Craig Bellamy from Liverpool.

Rafa Benitez has called on the Anfield faithful to play their part as the Reds go in search of top spot in the Premier League against West Ham this evening.
The boss understands the kind of frustration witnessed when Liverpool failed to break the deadlock at home to Fulham nine days ago. However, Benitez knows such nervousness can transmit to his players - a situation he is hoping to avoid as the Reds continue their quest for a first Premier League title. Following Chelsea's defeat to Arsenal yesterday, the Reds will take over at the top of the table if they take at least a point from tonight's clash. "We noticed the atmosphere the other day but the fans know we are together. They know it has to be like that when you want to win trophies," the Spaniard told Liverpoolfc.tv. "They can win us the game, but we know we have to do something on the pitch, then they can react. "You can understand them being nervous but it isn't March or April yet. "Maybe it transmits to some of the players but we are together. The fans know how important their support is." Liverpool have drawn two and lost two of the last seven games after their best ever start to a Premier League campaign. Benitez accepts his side have lost a touch of confidence, while on the pitch the tempo is not at the level witnessed earlier in the season. The boss added: "The last two games we didn't play with the same tempo and confidence. We had a meeting with the staff and talked about how to get these things back. "But the message was still very positive - we are top of the Premier League and have qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League. "The idea is very simple: try to do the things we were doing before, and try to give the players confidence. We were playing good football, creating chances and not giving teams many opportunities. "It is not easy for us to work any harder because we are running even more than before, so we just need to have more of the ball and keep possession, then we'll improve." One measure Benitez took this week was to give his players two days off following the 1-0 victory over Marseille. He explained: "Some players have worked very, very hard. Dirk Kuyt has played 27 games now - that's too much. So, a couple of days off to relax and be with their families is very positive."

GERRARD DOUBLE RESCUES POINT FOR REDS Liverpool have gone two points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League after Steven Gerrard scored a first-half brace to help Rafa Benitez's main come from two goals down and draw 2-2 with Hull City at Anfield. The Reds might only have the extra breathing space at the top of the table until Chelsea take on West Ham United tomorrow, but this enthralling match proved that it takes more than a couple of early goals to beat this resurgent Liverpool side. First in the league and fresh from topping their Champions League group courtesy of their midweek triumph in Eindhoven, Liverpool went into the match hoping to stretch their lead at the summit of English football. However, having witnessed back-to-back stalemates in our last two league encounters on home turf, the Anfield faithful may have been somewhat concerned by the Tigers' impressive away record. With 15 goals to their name prior to kick-off, only Chelsea had found the net more times on their travels than Phil Brown's main and with victories at Arsenal, Newcastle, Spurs and West Brom already under their belt, they will have been undaunted by the prospect of a trip to the league leaders. In fact, they had the first real opportunity of note when skipper Ian Ashbee headed a corner over the top on five minutes. It sparked an instant reaction from Liverpool, as both Yossi Benayoun and Albert Riera saw shots blocked before the Spaniard miscued when a searching corner from the left found him unmarked at the far post. The Reds were looking to avoid three successive goalless draws in the league for the first time in their history and could have gone in front on 10 minutes when Dirk Kuyt came within inches of adding the finishing touch to Xabi Alonso's dangerous free-kick. It was a moment they would rue just seconds later when defender Paul McShane out-jumped Andrea Dossena to steer a header into the top corner of apa-apa Reina's net and stun the home crowd. But Liverpool looked to make amends straight from the restart. Dirk Kuyt almost ended the home goal draught when he went within a hair's breath of converting Andrea Dossena's superb run and cross. It was a nervy moment for Hull but their dream start got even better when Marlon King's magnificent cross field ball found Bernard Mendy in space on the right. The defender turned winger surged to the byline and sent a dangerous ball across the face of goal which the unfortunate Jamie Carragher could only turn into his own net. The visiting support could barely believe their eyes. An instant reaction was required if Rafa and co were to avoid more Anfield angst and once again it was the skipper who dragged the Reds back into it. Kuyt found space down the right on 24 minutes and, although his dangerous cross was flicked clear by a desperate Tigers' defender, Gerrard was on-hand to steer the ball home. It was an incredible start to the proceedings, and with Liverpool sensing that another sensational comeback was on the cards, they set about turning the visitors' dream into a nightmare. Then Gerrard struck again to get the Reds' back into the match on 32 minutes. Carragher swung in a cross on the left flank for Kuyt to head down before controlling well and finding Benayoun, who looked up and played in the advancing Gerrard. Then the Reds' skipper made no mistake with a smart finish into the top corner. Liverpool continued to press forward and went in search of a third, but both teams went into the break level after a fantastic 45 minutes. Shooting towards the Anfield Road end, the Reds made a bright start to the second half and continued to probe the Hull rearguard. Gerrard made a series of forays forward, while Kuyt found some space across the front line. And it was from a Gerrard corner that Liverpool had the best chance of the second period. The Reds captain swung in a pinpoint corner for Sami Hyypia to head goalwards, but the Finnish international's powerful effort bounced off the left-hand post for the Hull defence to clear. But Hull continued to threaten and went straight down the other end to whip in another fierce shot over Reina's goal. It seemed that every time Liverpool went forward, Hull were never afraid to reply with equal measure. Introducing veteran striker Dean Windass to the proceedings in place of former Red Nick Barmby on 77 minutes suggested that Phil Brown wanted more than just a point from this encounter, but Rafa Benitez also made moves to win the match and introduced Nabil El Zhar, Ryan Babel and Lucas Leiva to the action. But despite pressing for a winner throughout the second period, Hull hung on to claim a point from this riveting encounter. This match came loaded entertainment value for the neutrals, but it will also be laced with more frustration for the Reds as they could only manage a point at Anfield for the third league game in a row. . Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has given Steven Gerrard his full backing following the events of earlier this week.
The Reds boss, who returned to Melwood today for the first time since undergoing surgery on a kidney stone problem a fortnight ago, said: "Steven is our captain and a key player for us, but more than this, I know him as a nice person. "I sat down with him this morning and had a very good talk with him about the situation and I was also able to speak at length with our club lawyer. "Steven explained to me what had happened and I told him he has my full support and backing, along with everyone else at the football club. "He's trained with the other lads this morning after a couple of days off for the squad and is keen now to focus solely on his football. "We've worked very hard to get into the position we're in going through to the New Year and all of us are determined to keep that progress going. "We'll do whatever we can to support Steven in the weeks ahead, but we're now concentrating on our preparation for the nothing Cup game at Preston this weekend."

Liverpool have made their best start to a Premier League season under Rafa Benitez and Peter O'Rourke assesses what Benitez needs to do in the transfer window if the Reds are to finally win the Premier League title.
How the new boys have done Rafa Benitez was again busy in the transfer market in the summer as he tries to transform his troops from pretenders to contenders and he could be tempted to make more forays in January to enhance their title challenge. The Spaniard brought in six new faces in the last transfer window with varying degrees of success. Robbie Keane was his biggest outlay from Tottenham and the Irishman has failed to hit the heights expected of him. The striker arrived amidst a fanfare that he could be the missing piece in the jigsaw, but Keane has struggled to establish himself as a regular in Benitez's side. Keane has scored only five goals in all competitions, but his case has not been helped by the fact that Benitez has shown a tendency to substitute the player early on in the second half of games. The signing of Albert Riera from Espanyol raised many eyebrows following a far from convincing loan spell at Manchester City in 2006, but he has been a success for Benitez who moved for his fellow Spaniard after failing to land Gareth Barry. Riera has given Liverpool much-needed width and he has provided an extra attacking dimension to Benitez's side. Italian defender Andrea Dossena arrived with a big reputation from Udinese, but he has struggled to impress. The full-back has shown signs that he is finding it hard to cope with the pace of English football and the jury is definitely still out on the Italian international. Diego Cavalieri arrived from Brazilian club Palmeiras, but it has been hard to judge the goalkeeper as he been brought in very much as an understudy to apa-apa Reina. Philipp Degen has endured a nightmare time since his move on a free transfer with the Swiss full-back spending most of his time in the treatment room and we have yet to see the player get a run in the side. David Ngog was something of a surprise signing and he is seen as someone very much for the future with the 19-year-old seeing his chances few and far between. What they need The whole right side of the Liverpool team is where Benitez will look to strengthen in the New Year as it has been a problem area for the Spaniard. Alvaro Arbeloa has almost been an ever-present at right-back and Benitez would like to bring in cover and competition for the Spanish international. A right-sided winger will be Benitez's top priority as it is a position where Liverpool look short. Jermaine Pennant looks to be on his way out of Anfield and Yossi Benayoun has struggled to establish himself as a regular. Dirk Kuyt has done a commendable job out on the right, but it is very much a case of square peg in round hole as the Dutchman is not a traditional winger and has been moved out to the right from his preferred striking role. A new central defender could be an option for Benitez if Daniel Agger, who is continually linked with a move away from Liverpool, leaves for pastures new in January. Benitez has a wealth of talent in central midfield so the only area he could look to bolster could be in attack. Fernando Torres has been sorely missed through injury for a large proportion of this season and Benitez could decide to look for someone with pace to add to his forward options. What they will get Well, that all depends on what money is made available to Benitez by American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. If rumours are believed Benitez may have to wheel and deal in the transfer market as substantial funds are unlikely to be made available to him despite currently sitting at the summit of the Premier League table. Benitez could decide to sell some fringe players to raise funds with reports suggesting he is keen on doing a swap deal with Tottenham by offering Pennant in part-exchange for Aaron Lennon. Another alternative for the right winger spot could be Croatian Darijo Srna who is attracting envious glances from a number of Premier League clubs. Portsmouth defender Glen Johnson is thought to be a target after impressing at Fratton Park this season, but the price-tag on the England international could put Liverpool off. A couple of old boys have also been linked with returns to Anfield with Emile Heskey and Michael Owen believed to be on the transfer radar. The signing of Owen from Newcastle would be popular among Liverpool fans, but Benitez has always played down talk linking them with a move for the striker. Heskey, who is coming to the end of his contract at Wigan, has admitted he is flattered to be linked with a move back to Anfield and Benitez could see the big striker as someone who could help take the burden off Torres when the Spaniard returns to fitness. There is more likely to be more outgoings than new faces at Anfield in the New Year as Benitez looks to trim his squad. The likes of Pennant, Benayoun, and Andrei Voronin, who is currently on loan at Hertha Berlin, could leave permanently. It has also been mooted that Benitez could dispense with the services of Keane and Dossena after less than six months at the club, but it is expected the Reds boss will give them more time to prove themselves. Dutchman Ryan Babel has cut a frustrated figure this season after being tipped to have a major impact this term. Babel has tried to engineer a move back to Ajax without success and it is unlikely Benitez will listen to offers for the attacker as he looks to keep their championship push on track. Fan's view - David Aston Liverpool should really splash the cash this transfer window if they are serious about winning the Premier League. Rafa Benitez should bring back Michale Owen for �3million as he would be the bargain of the season. A right winger would be a good signing someone like Aaron Lennon and a young defender, maybe Gareth bala. He should think of getting rid of Andrea Dossena, Phillip Degen, Jermaine Pennant and Yossi Benayoun.
